The Baho Spirit: Rwanda Fugi Banana Beer Ferment
Discover an extraordinary processing innovation from the Kizi Rift region in Rwanda’s Nyaruguru district. This exceptional, high-scoring microlot (89 pts) comes from the Fugi Washing Station, operated by Emmanuel Rusatira of Baho Coffee. Driven by the “Baho” philosophy—a Rwandan expression meaning to have life, be strong, and overcome adversity—Emmanuel partners with over 850 smallholder farmers to push the boundaries of specialty coffee. Cultivated at altitudes up to 1,850 masl, this lot undergoes a highly unique Anaerobic Natural “Banana Beer” fermentation. The result is a wildly complex, lactic, and intensely fruity cup. Expect a vibrant burst of strawberry, kiwi, and apricot, elegantly layered with sweet notes of loquat and white chocolate, finishing with delicate white flowers and a rich touch of hazelnut liqueur.
